Celebrating Earth Day in Our Kitchens

The Team at ‘Kitchen Rings’ needs a ripple effect to celebrate Earth Day. Will you join us? The ideas are are simple, and anyone can implement them. If all the kitchens hop on board, we can say that we really did do something for our planet. On an ongoing basis.

A Plan for Sustainable Environment-friendly Kitchen Practices (In 3 Parts)

Every year we have been renewing our intention of protecting the environment by celebrating the 22nd of April as the Earth Day. Perhaps you commemorate the day by participating in some special event. I enjoy that too.

A daily effort from every kitchen will help our Earth

Years ago, when I had to create a poster for one of these events, I realized how I could continue to make a difference throughout the year. I gathered that by taking small steps in my kitchen, I can follow the 3 Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) quite easily.

Many brave-hearts are making big differences as they combat thoughtlessness. For my part, I intend to add my tiny mite to their efforts. I do hope you agree that it is possible.

So today, I would like to share how we can all make a more sustainable contribution.

How to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle in Your Kitchen’

While we are coinciding the post with Earth Day, it is by no means a one day affair. So, to make it easier to remember, let us spilt what we can do from our kitchens to Reduce, Reuse and Recyle into three, as follows.

By-Products of Food:

Paneer is collected in a clean cloth and the whey is left behind
Whey from curd or paneer

These would be the things we throw away but can still be used in a different form to save time, effort and/or money, while helping our environment at the same time as we manage resources more efficiently.

Raw materials from food:

Waste material from the kitchen waiting to be recycled and re-used

The best examples of these are peels and shells, that can still be used. I know we have busy lives. But we must return them to the environment, giving it nourishment and replenishing its nutrients.

Other kitchen wastes:

Some thick foil lined covers stored for later use
Reuse clean covers from cereals

What can we do with jars, foil-coated covers, etc. so that we give them a fresh lease of life? Is it fair to chuck reusable ones and keep using more foil, tissues, new jars, etc? Do you also agree that our Earth will soon deteriorate to the point of no return if we don’t think about this?

We can make a Difference Together

I will elaborate on each of these later in this article. Let’s make this collaborative and make an impact.

I am so glad you are still with me so far. Let us given back to our planet by caring. Do share what you follow in your kitchen too. It will be great if we get our combined kitchens to be more environment friendly. Happy Earth Day! 🌏

Great Initiative Sheetal!! And you are back to your most loved place ie kitchen😊😊👍🏾!!
By the way, I read your article and got inspired to reuse water in which I boiled macroni for pasta to boil corns too. So, I tried to contribute a bit.
Just to share with you, I shared with my husband while cooking that though it will take a few minutes extra to wait for macroni to boil first and then I reuse the same water to boil corns. So, he said undoubtedly, saving water is way more precious than saving a few minutes. Hence, he accompanied me equally for this bit😊😊!! Keep sharing!!
