1 tbsp sesame oil
½ tsp mustard seeds
Few curry leaves
1 tsp urad daal (you can add more if you wish)
½ dry red chilli (If you want it to be spicy, add an entire red chilli)
1 onion chopped
½ tsp salt
4 tomatoes, chopped
2 tbsp roasted gram
½ cup coriander leaves, cleaned
¼ cup coconut, chopped or grated
½ inch tamarind
Method:
Heat oil in a pan.
Add mustard seeds and let it crackle.
Add urad daal. Add a few curry leaves.
Now add the chilli.
Immediately add onion. Let it all fry for 5 minutes.
Now add tomatoes and salt.
Add the roasted gram.
Let it cook for 5 minutes, covered.
Now add the coriander and the coconut. Cook for a further 5 minutes.
Now add the tamarind and let it cool a bit.
Grind and serve with any kind of idli, dosa, uthappam etc.
Options:
You can asubstitute urad daal for channa daal. Or add both. You can also add roasted peanuts.
You can add a pod of garlic with the onion.
You can leave out the coriander leaves. Or add mint leaves instead.
You can add small onions instead of one big.
You can change the quantity of coconut, or even leave it out.
If you do not have curry leaves, you can leave it out.
Also you can add a tadka of mustard and curry leaves in sesame oil on top of the prepared chutney.
